Expat Women Thailand - Picture Angela

Why would a single 40 year old woman want to move to a place full of lithe young backpackers and beaches? If you really need me to answer that, I think we may not be friends after all! Save your time and energy - stop reading now and go do something productive. I hear knitting is an excellent way to pass an evening.

In all seriousness, when I had the ephihany – or more righly a hard slap in the face with a cold fish – I decided that if I was going to volunteer for any length of time, the venue would have to suit my lifestyle. Call me naïve, but a place surrounded by beaches and great, cheap, vegetarian friendly food seemed ideal. The idea of going anywhere cold left me... well cold and frankly, India was just too damn hard. So PHUKET... here we come.

I leave for Phuket in a matter of days, the visa arrives tomorrow, I don't have syphillus and my back pack is nearly ready to be packed. I am residing in the nervous/excited phase. Obviously, I am sad to be leaving NZ, yet again, but keen to get on and do something new and good for the world. I have some massive karmic debt, that 6 months of working with tsunami orphans might make a dent in.

I am at heart, a dreamer. I have many hopes and dreams for phase 3798 of my life. I hope I can find a bunch of like minded girls who love gin, giggles and Glee as much as I do. I hope I can make my meagre savings last. I hope that I can make a difference and I hope that I don't bore you sensless wirth my ravings.

    Until I arrive.

Angela is a fearless and tireless ambassador for all that is good in this world – especially if it involves wine and cheese. This self confessed hedonist is taking a break from her life of international fame and fortune to volunteer in Phuket for 6 months with a charity called Phuket Has Been Good To Us. Although she has lived in some fabulous other countries, she is a first time migrant to Thailand, having previously visited a number of times to work on her tan and learn how to drink from buckets.
